She looked at the tiny face with curiosity; her own face scrunched up as she observed the baby yawn, burp and promptly went to sleep. A pair of womanly arms rocked the baby slightly.
"She's so small!" she quipped. Tinkling laughter softly caressed her ears and she looked up at the woman who held the baby.
The woman's hair was a burnished copper, glowing from the sun's light. And because of the light, she couldn't see the woman's whole face. More important for her, though, was that she could see the smile the woman gave her. A feeling of calm and happiness washed over her as she looked in the woman's warm smile.
"She's supposed to be tiny, dear," the woman explained. "She'll grow soon enough, and then you two can play together."
She looked back at the baby, trying to imagine how they would play. Although, how could something as tiny as that climb trees? Or how could the baby run around with no care? It was baffling.
A hand went over to pat her head, smoothing her hair. She looked up again expectantly.
"Promise me, Kira," the woman said. "Promise me you'll take care of her.
"Promise me you will protect your baby sister."
She gave the brightest smile she could muster, even with a front tooth missing.
"Yes, mother!"
Tiit-tiit…tiit-tiit…tiit-tiit…
Kira's eyes opened at once when she heard the alarm. She blinked several times to get rid of the last wispy threads of sleep. She blinked away the dream as well, although she could not remember a thing from it, only that she knew she dreamed. Hazy images in her mind just went even more blurry; was that a baby she just saw? Why would she dream of a baby?
The buzz of her intercom sounded, and she sat up from bed. The blanket slid from her chest, baring her naked body. She always slept in the nude, not because it was a sensual thing for her, but it was necessary. It was faster to wear her clothes and gear without having to peel off what she already had on first.
The intercom buzzed again, and she finally stood up and walked towards the small white box near her door. She pressed a button. "Yes?"
It was Chilly's voice on the other line. "Suit up, lovely," his voice crackling slightly from the static. "We have another one in the works."
