When I was a child
I could hear the grass grow
The whole world stirred slow
When I was a child.
When I was a child
When Dad whistled, we ran
In the Fall, Mother canned
When I was a child.
When I was a child
We went to church through Lent
A dreary day was seldom spent
When I was a child.
When I was a child
We went for Sunday drives
We shared our neighbor’s lives
When I was a child.
When I was a child
We loved helping the Vet
I knew our needs were met
When I was a child.
When I was a child
We scrubbed floors on our knees
Explored the branches of trees
When I was a child.
When I was a child
We fished Bullhead in our pond
Played “fox and geese” on the lawn
When I was a child.
When I was a child
Mom swore by, Vapors of Vicks
Our cupboards always needed fixed
When I was a child.
When I was a child
We made snug blanket tents
Wrapping up our register vents
When I was a child.
When I was a child
The clover would stream wild
In amethyst seas stretching miles
When I was a child.
When I was a child
A wagon of corn was treasure
Spring births gave pleasure
When I was a child.
When I was a child
Mom fried doughnuts in an iron pan
Open-air breeze, our only fan
When I was a child.
When I was a child
We moved hogs while the bus would wait
Clutching for armor, an old panel gate
When I was a child.
When I was a child
Feet grew calloused running bare
The bath water we had to share
When I was a child.
When I was a child
The corn dryer would lull me to sleep
As I held stars in the sky my keep
When I was a child.
When I was a child
My dad would arise prior the sun
To get the early milking done
When I was a child.
When I was a child
There wasn't a place on the farm
Where I didn't feel safe from harm
When I was a child.
When I was a child
I thought it would forever be the same
But, that was a theory in vain
When I was a child.
