The Sacred : Native American Poetry

Have you ever considered the mound builders

And why they created these effigies?

Did they consider the eagle superior

Or respect the bears’ ferocity?

Were they afraid of the universe

And the vastness of the skies?

Do you believe such simple people

Might only wonder the suns rise?

Perhaps they were not archaic

Alas, we in our superior mind,

Only now in our “green” campaigns

Discover the truth of mankind;

We are not above every living creature

But merely equal to its worth

And these people who came before us

Realized their place on this earth.

I believe these Native Americans

did not worship what was feared

Instead, symbolic was the balance of life

And that force was revered.

The earth does not gain by civilization

And humankind does not hold itself distinct,

Unless we consider the balance of life sacred

We may find ourselves…

Extinct.
