He sat alone at Sue Z’s Bar
A working man calloused and gray
Everyone seemed to know him
Gave a nod and walked away
He drank his whiskey sevens
In the shadow of the room
Tapped his fingers to the jukebox
As it played a familiar tune
Although, I didn’t know him
I knew I’d seen his face
Searched my memory for a picture
And a name I couldn’t place
I saw her in the grocery store
Buying TV dinners and wine
She counted change from her coin purse
I waited impatiently in line
Outside she lit a
Waiting for the taxi to appear
Trembling fingers held the receipt
Checking the truth of the cashier
Although, I didn’t know her
I knew I’d seen her face
Searched my memory for a picture
And a name I couldn’t place
I noticed him in the school yard
Could tell he wanted to play
But when he walked up to other children
They just laughed and walked away
A teacher came up to him
Said something I couldn’t hear
Though in the center of the play ground
That child seemed to disappear
Although, I didn’t know him
I knew I’d seen his face
Searched my memory for a picture
And a name I couldn’t place
As I was standing at the sink
I glanced into the mirror
Startled by who I saw there
The memories became clear
We needed no introduction
“Lonely” was the name
Disguised on different faces
Eyes reflect the same
Although, I didn’t know it
I knew I’d seen that face
In that glass was the picture
Of the name I couldn’t place.
