The Inheritance
Whoever said, “It is better to have loved and lost
then to never have loved at all.”
…
has never endured the death of a child
suffering the betrayal of God’s merciless call
has not been thrown aside by a nation
a defiled symbol of a finished war
left to solicit life on the streets
and survive as freedom’s whore
has never clutched the decay of abuse
nor carried the doubt of self worth
been born to want love from a parent
who has only despised them since birth
has never survived in wretched poverty
ingested by the bile of despair
disregarded by a civilized world
that’s to self enlightened to care
has not devoted themselves to a man
to find they married violence and shame
given only the offer of fear in return
for the privilege of submissions name
it may be better to never feel loves burden
because it is an emotion that deceives
sometimes a wound that never heals
will be the only inheritance in its leave.
