Many summers have seen my years
The moon has glistened upon my tears.
Night has shrouded during times of sorrow
Concealing all vision for my tomorrow.
There is much of the blue coats I don’t understand
Why they feel they own our Mother’s land.
The greed that shines brightly upon their chest
Reflects heavy, the medals across their breast.
I have given my days in search of peace
My Clan starves while the whites grow obese.
Devouring us with lapping, forked, tongues
We choke on lies, of scraps they have flung.
Flanked by changing times, I have tried
To ensure our survival and stay our pride.
To understand ways strange to my own
Seeking audience among the unknown.
Still, my joys have been seen by the sun
Witness to each victory our Nation has won.
To the echo of thunder I have danced
For this, I am thankful to have known my chance.
There will be changes when I am gone
Still, my spirit will drift along.
The air will carry me among four winds
And the circle of life will bring me home again.
We are only Caretakers while we breathe
Now, merely an instant- compared to eternity.
Then it is for our children to value the past
And strive toward the legacy they want to last.
For no other person can thieve who we are
Though time and journey may take us far.
It is within each of us, that heritage remains
What our Creator has given-
Must be ours to maintain.
