I have taken that step
That I had so long feared,
And in that final moment
My vision was cleared.
Roses are lovely in Heaven
And the music I hear-
It echoes over gardens
Where sorrow disappears.
Do not weep in sadness
I lived prolonged and well,
And I am no longer weary
From my tired bones rebel.
For each step I have taken
Since I was born to earth,
Was to prepare me for eternity
The moment of my soul’s birth.
So, deliver my body now
To that familiar, sandy loam,
To the soil of Prairie du Chien
Take me home.
