Dear Dad,
You never said you loved me
Except…
When you shared stories of old,
Tales about the little people,
And what your imagination would unfold.
You never said you loved me
Except…
At 4 a.m. when you bellowed up the stairs.
Worked me like hell with my hangover,
I guess you weren’t so unaware.
You never said you loved me
Except …
When you played “Ini-Ini Over”
And mowed “Fox and Geese” trails
Through the tall grass and clover.
You never said you loved me
Except…
When I had to complete my chores twice.
It didn’t do any good to finish fast
If I had to be so damned precise!
You never said you loved me
Except…
When you let me ride along the tractor wing
Taught me the miracles of nature
And the magic of Spring.
You never said you loved me
Except…
For his girls, no man is good enough
And just ask anybody…
There are none half as tough!
You never said you loved me
Except…
In how valuable you made us kids to each other
Or, how you explained there is no one on earth
More important then our mother.
So when your only answer is, “Yep”
After I say, “I love you”.
I know it may not sound like it
But, you’ve said that you love me too!
Love you dad
Happy Birthday,
Sherrie
