He tells of that man-
that man his mother kept,
as though, only yesterday
a child’s tears were wept.
But, it was long ago
and lessons past
still, the remembrance
as the hurt, obligingly last.
His drunken conduct
his mother’s choice the man stay
even now, her resolve
haunts his life to this day.
And yet, his own decision
was to become the same
as the very person
that holds his pain.
And in the name of his love
she, now the mother,
allows him every chance
while her own children suffer.
Even though, he never recalls
her children can hear-
how much will chase them
throughout their years?
Will they be as he is
filled with anger and justification?
Will they someday use him
as a crutch to their own validation?
Or, when they hold their own children
and bring to mind her name
will they speak of it, as he does his mother’s
filled with criticism and shame?
