The Village Rat : Animal Poetry

written by Poet : Paul McCann

Although I live in your town I'm not welcome there and from a rats point of view, its not very fair.

Do you ever think of me as friendly at all ?

Why do you fear me when I'm so timid and small .

Let me tell you a little about me, the rat .  I run under your feet what do you think of that .

I scurry here and scramble there unseen by you , in a world you'll never know I'm watching you too .

Underneath the concrete where the pipes and wires run  Behind steel shutter doors where people seldom come .

The shops always open I slowly walk inside .

When customers come in I find a place to hide .

I nibble the small goods when there no one around .

I scratch at the walls but they never hear a sound .

They say that I'm dirty but that's up to yourself .

I clean up the mess you humans leave on the shelf .

I mind my own business but now don't you forget,

I know where your baits are and where your traps are set .

Though you scream and fight and you're always in bad moods, I never bother you with my family feuds .

I'd rather be a rat that human any day .

So mind your own business and we'll get on ok .
