The Singing Cop : Friendship Poetry

written by Poet : Paul McCann

Joe Mc Laughlin was a copper and with a happy heart to boot  .

He sang his way down a Derry beat .

Keeping an eye out at the night for the hard nuts knocking about on the corner there by Barleycorn Street  .

Standing around the corner all the boys would scream and shout and the singing cop was chanting to the moon .

With his note book out and in his hand the pencil would be drawn and then he'd sing that old familiar tune.

You better stop this carrying on boys,
stop this carrying on,
before the day's through or you'll be gone,
to a quiet little place I know under lock and key,
where you'll be singing through the bars till the dawn.

"Listen up now me boys " he'd say ,
"Your names are all in my book",
then he would turn his back and walk away.

Someone would knock his hat off,
While another would steal the book,
while the rest of the boys would chant away.

By hook or by crook it's us who have written the book and you can't sing when the corner boys are out of tune.

Standing on the corner with a smile upon his face the singing cop began a crooning to the moon.

Suddenly they joined in with their heads all in a spin, And the songs they sang were ones made up for fun.

Sure they were rare times indeed on the corner of Barleycorn Street just before the troubles had begun.

The corner now has gone now and the cop is seen no more but his song reminds us where to draw the line .

Have a heart if you're a hard nut,
For the long arm of the law ,
is singing to the moon and doing fine .
