The Grand National : Sports Poetry

written by Poet : Paul McCann

April at Aintree and Grand National day .
The horses run and punters come to play .
April showers and flowers are in bloom .
The sun is shinning behind all the gloom.
Horse whispers are in everybody's ear .
Who's going to win the national this year?
As all the jockeys line up on their spot,
The horses all go a clipity-clop .
It's a one way trip there's no turning back ,
Up and down they go on a cul de sac ,
they run to beechers brook, some fall away ,
it's like a merry go round here today,
slipping and sliding, it's a steady pace .
The Grand National is a hell of a race .
Here they all come down the straight ,
what a run .
I've got the winner and a tidy sum .
Gay Trip and a pocket full of money .
Dark clouds gather but I think it's sunny
