The Eye Outside : Narrative Poetry

written by Poet : Paul McCann

He stood at the door hungry and poor .

They said look what crawled out of the sewer ,

Their words like daggers cruelly sent  .

Inside the hall the well dressed all went,

Producing tickets to get inside .

The homeless man watched from the outside .

The room overspilt with chatter,

About what ?

It didn't matter .

There was food and drink for everyone.

The Christmas party had begun.

The tables were decorated well

With Bon Bons and colourful tinsel .

There were paper plates and serviettes  .

The man with a  mic paid his respects .

"You're all welcome here today ."

He said .

Outside the hall someone needed fed  .

The homeless man looked in the window .

And waited for the people to go  .

The kitchen staff put out the garbage .

And the homeless man went on a siege .

Pulling through all the leftover food .

And he ate up as much as he could .

He ran and hid as people walked past .

And woke up on the street at Christmas .
