On a cold winters night I knelt before my bed
and my prayers were being said .
I remember falling asleep
and then my father putting me into bed .
Then I woke up and from downstairs
I heard my little sister's voice screaming out .
I went downstairs to see what was wrong
And my Dad was already there about .
Clothing was thrown over the end of the bed
and my sister began to scream ,
"There's a big black cat at the end of the bed ."
buy Dad said ,
"Its only a dream "
With the calm sound of Dads reassuring voice
soon the monster cat was forgot .
Looking back at my childhood I think to myself ,
Dad had helped us quite a lot.
When we were young my family and I
Were lucky to have a Dad so good .
Dad did all that he could to protect us from harm
in our Belfast neighbourhood .
There were monsters on the street and some in our head
Who only wanted to kill .
But no matter what the situation was
Dad was there to defend us still .
Then all the insecurity and fear
Dad would easily push them aside .
Suddenly they no longer had a hold on us
no matter how hard they tried .
In my childhood Dad was always there
but times have changed and now those days are done .
Because I've grown up and I'm a Dad myself
And all my children are young .
Dad is no longer here for me
But his memory has never disappeared .
I hope to be as good as he who rescued me
From things as a boy I feared .
