Surviving The Never Ending War : Narrative Poetry

written by Poet : Paul McCann

War came suddenly into my life

and changed the world I knew  .

There was no choice just acceptance

of what we had to go through  .

Because there was no choice

I felt war had cheated and robbed me .

Then I decided not to be a victim ,

but to be free.

But first I had to question everything

 I saw taking place .

War's an awful situation

each day that you have to  face .

I felt like asking someone

why did this have to happen here   .

But no one would have heard ,

they were too busy dealing with fear    .

I felt angry and thought ,

if only I could change how it was .

The injustice and oppression

of all those who made the laws .

I felt sorrow and bitter

and it was hard to let it go .

I lost innocence within me

that had just started to grow .

I watched places around me explode

and then burn to the ground .

I saw innocent people getting bashed up

and  pushed around

I understood why some took up the gun

but what could I do .

I escaped the war ,

they said I was one of the lucky few    .
