Summer Café And An Empty Cup : Narrative Poetry

written by Poet : Paul McCann

Its summer in the city and its time for a lunch break .

I asked this girl who is a temp in data base intake , if she would like to join me for lunch on this nice day .

Being shy its always hard to find the right words to say    .

When she said ok I almost jumped three feet in  the air .

We left our work stations and walked out in the summer glare  .

It was a beautiful day and the sidewalks were busy .

People with starbucks cups and other things cool and fizzy .

We're doing lunch together, in this kind of café shop .

The pace of life and all the traffic, never seems to stop   .

Surrounded by sneezes , coughs

and all kinds of sounds around me .

I'm sitting trying to stretch out, a half a cup of tea .

The clinking of spoons on saucers

and I'm thinking , that's nice .

Lonely sounds, trying to escape ,from all the daily strife .

Inside my head I hear my heart and this is what it said ,

Be easy and remain apart from the thoughts in your head .

Like a TV show I watched then changed the channel to her   .

She pulled another ring pull from a can of beer and there ,

she began slurping it down ,until her throat was all clear  .

I looked into her eyes so distant red and filled with cheer

My heart was longing to be heard,

but just where could I start ?

I have to say , I had to put away my pounding heart .

Loneliness and togetherness, can raise a quiet fear .

Table talk and endless chit chat ; this and that in my ear .

Scrambled noise and all that city life employs, ever near .

The waitress says , can I help you ?

I want to disappear .

She smiled a friendly smile .

Another can of beer my dear ?

Oh yes please ,

Lets do lunch again sometime :

Maybe next year .
