In a commissioned house we brought up our kids where the rooms are dangerously small ,
We've worked in jobs that don't pay much , with our backs constantly against the wall .
They call us housies - down in the gutter Lord that's what they think we are ,
So while we are living here in the ghetto , I'll keep wishing on a star .
Sure we might be a poor family but how low they stoop to let us know
Through cruel slurs we love our kids and try to shield them from the mud they throw .
So we scrape together all we have to put our children through Catholic school .
We pick second hand dresses and second hand shirts from the school clothing pool .
Oh for a life my wife and I , Oh for respect in the community .
For many years we've struggled and they call us the two dollar family .
We say our prayers each night and day and believe that God dwells here within .
Yes we're poor in spirit but thank God we're worth more than two dollars to him
