Mississippi's Overflow : Narrative Poetry

written by Poet : Paul McCann

I cannot swim , I fear the waters rising up on me .
The overflow weaves a path that flows on out to sea .
Mississippi river sail away ,
who can stop your flow?
Wide and vast you sweep on past ,
tell me how deep do you go?
I cannot swim I fear the water, come and rescue me .
I'm sitting on a rooftop,in the town of St louis .
I think I'll stay up here a while,
there's no place else to go .
All the town is drowned by Mississippi's overflow .
I cannot swim I fear the waters up above my head,
soon I may be sleeping in a watery riverbed .
If I had a boat Mississippi wouldn't bother me,
as I could float upon the river creeping up on me .
I cannot swim but fear no more,
now I am safe and dry .
I'm sitting in a helicopter high up in the sky .
Down below I can see nothing but the Mississippi ,
drowning the town of St louis in 1993.
