Conscientious Objectors : Narrative Poetry

written by Poet : Paul McCann

Even though it wasn't compulsory
a long line up of men got in the queue to enlist.
It was the expected thing to do.

Better to win a medal than to be sent a white feather
for standing up for an ideal
that you believed to be true.

Sent to prison and scorned by the community;
some who preferred not to go to war
had literally died and passed away.

Remember all those who did not want to fight.
Their names are dishonoured as conscientious objectors.

What a price to pay.
