Christmas In The Shelter : Sad Poetry

written by Poet : Paul McCann

The homeless sleep rough at Christmas time  wishing for a home of their own and from street to street then along the alleys the homeless people roam ,

until they come to the shelter where they beg for a bed and some bread , but  the man who runs the shelter there puts out his hand and shakes his head

Unless you've got a fiver of course which would get you in for the night  .

The streets are a cold and merciless place where nothing is out of sight .

It was Christmas Eve down  at the shelter and there wasn't a bed to spare ,s o the few who knew of the penny rope system made there way over there .

It was called the penny rope because that's how much it cost to buy a spot ,on a rope tied across a room where you could hang all your weary lot  .

On Christmas morning there's a free cooked breakfast all for hungry men ,with donations of clothes arriving constantly every now and then .

It's Christmas in the shelter and there's a party for everyone there , someone is selling raffle tickets and the first prize is a new home .

See the homeless smile and for a while Christmas is not so alone .

Its Christmas in the shelter and Santa arrived as everyone planned ,with some gifts for all the residents there and a penny in the hand .
