In my childhood Christmas was a wonderland ,
slipping and sliding through snow .
Keeping awake and expecting to hear Santa singing out ,
Ho-Ho-Ho .
I imagined I heard jingle bells
and I wondered what toys might be sent .
I was too excited to say my prayers
but remained there with my knees bent .
Ready to jump into bed at anytime if he decided to show
As my eyes got heavier the wanting to stay awake began to go .
I remember falling asleep and my father putting me into bed .
The next thing that I knew it was Christmas morning
and down the stairs I fled ,
Toys had been laid out on chairs
and the joy inside wanted to burst out .
My Mum and Dad would say to me
what did you get and I began to shout .
I got a ball and unwrapping some more things I'd scream ,
Look what else I've got .
Looking back at my childhood then I think to myself ,
I had quite a lot.
The innocence of childhood when I was young
and Christmas times were so good .
Off to war with bows and arrows and tommy guns,
around the neighbourhood ,
Off to sail the sevens seas in a cardboard ship
with sea monsters to kill .
And out in the streets as children we played
with the toys Santa brought until
we had run out of places to hide
and our Mums and dads called us inside.
Christmas was gone
and we couldn't hold on to it no matter how we tried .
In my childhood the Christmas fun lasted all day
but now those days are done
Still its great to look back and remember those Christmas days when I was young .
