At Least That's What They Said : Narrative Poetry

written by Poet : Paul McCann

Catholic's and Protestants can't get on .

What's the solution ?

There is none its gone .

At least that's what they said .

The riots were a way fighting back .

Never give an inch , hard nuts never crack .

At least that's what they said .

Knock the knocker on someone else's door .

Tit for tat is how to even the score .

At least that's what they said .

There is no room left to bury the dead ,

So use the ocean or burn them instead  .

At least that's what they said .

Since the war started so many have died .

When the troops arrived they were on our side .

At least that's what they said  .

Up the republic but Ulster says no ,

Our day will come and the troubles will go .

At least that's what they said .

Power struggles were put aside .

Peace arrived .

Terrorism had no place left to hide .

At least that's what they said .

There's no guns on the street , no bombs in store .

There's no need to live in fear anymore .

At least that's what they said .

We can live together in peace at last ,

Because there's no more trouble in Belfast .

At least that's what they said .

If they speak for us what have we to say .

We've had enough , tell them to go away .

Thank God , it's all been said .
