Heart beating, waiting for the fire of the
starting gun to release me from the block,
I take a deep breathe and look ahead.
It's a short distance and only the fastest will prevail.
Shaking still, the gun is raised.
"Runners on your mark…" here it comes.
"Get set…" I'm ready… "Go!" (bang).
I'm startled from the sound
but my body continues to sprint onward;
my lungs begin to burn,
I continue to push through the pain.
I don't see the others.
They aren't far behind
for I can hear the sounds of their sprints
sticking to the track.
I run faster and drain all the sounds,
I see the finish line and push myself harder.
By the end of the race I'm not proud of my win
but graced by the effect of the run itself.
I live to run.
