Remember Me : Memorial Day Poetry

written by Poet : Linda Riggi

Remember Me

by Linda Riggi 2008

I signed up because I thought it was the right thing to do.  Protect my country, my family, and my friends.  I was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice if I was called upon to do so.  I served in Afganistan and I will spare you all that my eyes have seen.  War can have an ugly face.

I went to my heavenly home twice before being allowed to return to my earthly home.  I asked my maker to please allow me another chance, because all I could think about was my mom, who spent the last two months at my bedside crying for me to return to her.  My physical body had been badly burned and I was in a coma for the last two months.

When I finally awoke I felt the pain I was not allowed to feel when I was absent of my body.. Still, I knew I made the right decision.  My Mom and Dad were both there for me day and night praying for my return.  It was a happy reunion and nothing short of a miracle.

I am 27, I am spanish, my parents are from Mexico.  I have no family of my own yet.. I hope to one day.. and I will tell my children of my experiences with war.  I will raise them honorably, and tell them of my miracle.  They will grow with a heart being proud of their heritage.

All I ask in return for my efforts is for you to remember me when confronted with todays immigration problems.  Remember some Mexican-Americans are willing to lay thier life down for you and the freedom and safty of your family.  Just Remember Me.

"In loving thoughts of my friend Jose Lopez."
