"THE DRUM BEATS"
The drum beats – best young men rally – bright-eyed innocence – tall and proud,
Nervous parents hear talk of victory – veteran fathers with heads bowed.
Sons departing – called to duty – another generation – another war,
Horrible noise – fallen comrades – senseless victories – the cry "What for?"
Fear of death – fear of survival – innocence lost forever – body bags,
Doorbells announce official visits – shattered parents – widows and mothers at funerals accept folded flags.
Returning heroes – silent pain – fatherless children – political shame,
Veteran's hospitals tend broken bodies – some sit forever – some forever lame.
New sons born – little league – high school – father/son bleacher seats,
Another madman – nervous parents – best young men rally – as again – "The Drum Beats."
