DIVORCE : Relationship Poetry

written by Poet : bolin63

Their Father sits, head in hands to hide his tear stained face,

Their stunned Mother stares at nothing, wondering what brought them to this time and place.

The children listen fearfully just inside their bedroom door,

As each word shreds piece by piece the world they will live in no more.

Their parents agree it's no one's fault – there's really no one to blame,

The children slump against their door, their emotions and stability sacrificial lambs in this game.

The next day is the meeting where their parents explain they need to live apart,

Their worst fears realized, confusion and betrayal rush into each child's heart.

When asked what happened to their love they say "We just grew out of touch".

"It has nothing to do with you, we both still love you just as much."

All questions go unanswered, no one accepting any blame.

The children's innocent unblemished logic tells them this is just the beginning of this game.

Dad leaves with the promise of weekends full of fun and special things,

Somehow they know it's a "what they need to hear" empty promise and sense the hurt and pain it soon brings.

Soon the excuses from both parents start to fall on tuned out deaf ears,

It guards against the pain as the fear of commitment slowly builds over the years.

They mature refusing to feel love, never letting anyone in,

Losing any chance of true happiness, fear of past betrayal not allowing them to win.

If they are lucky someone will out love them, crumbling their walls of distrust with patience and time,

Releasing to long unshed tears, finally opening them to the wonder of unconditional loves sense and rhyme.
