I went to my uncles funeral today
It seems a few years ago I passed out rice bags
At my aunt & uncles wedding
As the Lutheran pastor spoke
I almost thought I was Lutheran
He spoke the internet and how the world is so fast
As my uncle pictures flashed across the church
Has now gone high tech
I welcomed the screen images of a man
Once a child, husband, father,
Them seeing him sick, living on a respirator
Clinging to life in pain for many years
It was awesome to remember
His smiling face and funny smiles- gestures
When he was young and beautiful
It seems a few moments ago
Made me think about this person I never knew- so close
Now he is gone and all that was left was an urn
On the mantle in front of stained glass windows
A man speaking words about a heaven we hope for
An organ grinding amazing grace
It reminded me how death marches for us all
How quickly life passes
Easily we lose touch with our family
And the next time we meet them
We are staring at their casket or urn
Pictures on a screen, or table of a life now gone
we must realize, remember
Someday it will be you or I in the casket or urn
It could be today, in the next moment
A year, a few more decades
Life passes very fast
Too soon death plays its music
The melody of his song is
Death marches to -us all
In memory of my Uncle Rod
Smiling down at eight grandchildren
Many who loved him
Hearing his own death song
And this niece who forgot to tell him
Until I wrote this song
