Before we were all a number
There were quaint fine, boutiques
Mom and pop grocery stores
People had jobs, we had factories
Americans had health insurance
You, could buy something stamped
“Made in America”
Back in the day’s before the machines
ruled us as if we were
nothing more than a number
In the times before Wally owned
The world, with cheap goods
you could afford to shop
Something that wasn’t made in a sweat shop
Dollars went farther
And people could find jobs
Everyday and any day
If they wanted to work
We had fine fabric, craft and art stores
That were not large chains
People smiled more,
in the days before everyone
became a number
We had the
America Dream
A poet had some hope
They could print a book
And distribute it in small friendly
Unique shop where people
read the books
There were many art galleries
artist’s could consign
with big hopes, of sales large and small
Before everything became a big mall
Of made in China
Back in the days before everything
Was controlled by a beast
Named cooperate greed
Back in the olden days
Before you and I were a number
We didn’t have to lock our doors
You could call and talk
to a real person
People knew your name
Inventors could sale fun games
Artists could develop a name
People paid for real paintings, sculptures
Before everything was ran
By vain stars, the filthy rich and computers
In those days artists could afford clay
To make a mold and play
People bought real art
Back in the days before
McDonaldization
Of our nation
When we had the American dream
We could fly on an airplane
Get served a meal with a smile
By a pretty stewardess
People apologized for rudeness
Men pumped gas
They cleaned our wind shields
People cared about service
Back in the day
We were a nation, with hope
Stamped
“In God we trust.”
And no one was ashamed to say it
People stayed married, back in those days
Love lasted, children were happy
Dreams came true back in the day
Before we all became a number.
