Cure 2 the xmas blues

Gingerbread Doll Love!

There is nothing more uplifting than the smell of Christmas cookies. I thought today I would post my recipe for Gingerbread dolls. The cure to depression and holiday blues is baking. Young or old, male or female-

alone or if your house is filled with a full of family baking uplifts spirits like nothing else in the world. The sweet smell of ginger and spices is the alchemist cure all.

Being a divorced mother, there were years we split the kids, and everyone at some point in life finds themselves alone on Christmas. The one thing I learned spending more than one holiday alone is, well- “your worth cooking and baking for, even if its just for you!”

I cut my ginger bread cookies in many shapes, but making dolls out of them is really fun and it keeps your mind busy and there is nothing as wonderful as the sense of accomplishment with pretty eatable dolls. This is the best gingerbread, original recipe I have ever found!

1 cup of butter flavored Crisco

1 cup of sugar

1 egg

1 cup of molasses

2 tablespoons vinegar

5 cups of sifted all purpose flour

1 ˝ teaspoons of baking soda

˝ teaspoon of salt

3 teaspoons of ginger

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon fine ground cloves

Cream shortening (nuke it on defrost a few minutes to soften) with sugar. Set eggs out ahead to room temperature, whip and add in when shortening has cooled. Add molasses, vinegar. Sift all dry ingredients together. And add to creamed ingredients.

Chill at least 3 hours, up to overnight.

On lightly floured surface, roll to 1/8” thickness and cut out your dolls.

I traced the gingerbread cookie cutter I had and made them boys and girls, cowboys and angels. It just takes a bit of practice try cutting them out by folding down center to be sure they are even.

Use half cut raisins for eyes, cinnamon hots for buttons eyes and candies for decorations. The real secret to icing is real vanilla = never use imitation if possible.

Use your favorite icing, mine I use a bit of butter, some real cream and mix, sometimes I add a bit of cream cheese. I mix it by sight to desired taste and consistency. To make and easy piping decorative tool. Fold parchment paper in a cone and tape, slightly thin to pipe in and cut the end to make your own decorative tool. Merry Christmas and bake to ease any depression and gift everyone you know with a cookie. A fun way to do it is to make everyone a doll!

The simplest handmade gift, they can eat means so much! Believe me once you start this project you have no time to feel depressed or alone! Heck give them to people on the street, just share your gingerbread doll Love!

I keep my patterns that are cut out with a very sharp knife in my recipe book, to find it each year. If its too late this year, print this recipe and save it for next year! But its never too late to start baking cookies!

Merry, merry Christmas!
