Copyrights
Today I wanted to mention copyrights on art shown online. Pretty pictures and images are just wonderful - we live in an internet age and we are a visual society. However;
we must always consider, do we own the art we are using?
It is obvious in the computer age, artistic graphics are a modern form of art. If you are just nabbing pretty pictures someone takes and uploading them on your site, without permission. You are violating this person, or companies rights.
Legitimate copyrights (there are few online) contain language that specifically state no usage of a copyright image; this does include a companies logo or name. You can be sued for it!
In my studies I have found few care, because they have nothing to lose, and often in it not monitored. But I can assure you there are people who do nothing but search for companies- seeking to find infringement.
I have seen artisans sued; who lost every thing they had, and every thing they will ever have, doing it. And believe me you do not want a multi million or billion dollar companies lawyers up your butt. Or a design company, or a photographer’s attorney.
You may just find yourself with a cease and desist order.
It just so happens I know the law, I studied it in person at the United States, patent, trademark and copyright offices. Now this was before computers, - you can actually apply online for a copyright. By typing in the U.S. copyright office- and read the language yourself, it is not necessary to hire an attorney to do this. They are very easily applied for - by anyone who can read and write.
As a photographer I deeply resent anyone using my copyright images and putting it with their poetry. I see this very often online. Including people cutting things out of magazines and tweaking it.
Termage- tweaking is taking something that belongs to another artist and changing it to make it their own.
There are places online you can buy “public domain” images and photography, cut outs etc -that are considered- public property. And there are also many free images- and downloads.
Thank you for respecting a copyright, they also apply to words.
