The Jumping Competition : Childrens Poetry

written by Poet : Trishia Ooi Leng Choo

The Jumping Competition

Let the story begin……..

Long, long ago, it was on this one evening……(pause)

When a cricket, a frog and a kangaroo

Sitting and singing a rhyme that goes like this…..

We’re born Great

We jump and sing

Better than any other animals

In this jungle…we live

Ruled by a Great king

With his knights

Dukes and Duchesses

Counts and Countesses

Come on and see for yourself

If you have doubts

Oh…believe us

We’re doing great here

We eat well

We sleep well

We work well

We feel great

Aha…aha….aha....aha

And we jump well too

Better than any other animals

In this jungle…we live

Ruled by a Great king

With his knights

Dukes and Duchesses

Counts and Countesses

As they’d finished….

Each one sat still

In deep thoughts….

Hmmmmm…….

Now…who is the best among them!

They looked at each other

Arguing to be the best

In jumping!

Jumping??

Jumping? Did we hear jumping?

Yes! Jumping!

Ooooooo……jumping!

I jump the highest!

No…I jump the highest!

Ahaha….! No…no…no….You got it all wrong!I am the best jumper!

No…you’re not!

Yes…I am!

Who told you…who told you’re the best? I am the best of all!

And so they argued and argued

Who was the best

Finally…(pause)

A competition was to be held

Competition?

Competition? Did we hear competiton?

Yes! Competition!

Ooooooo……competition!

And so……..

The news spread all over the world…

Everyone was so excited

Even the King…..

His Knights, duke and duchesses

Count and countesses

Waiting for that day!

When the grand day has come ….…(tra..ta ta ta ta ta ta….)

Drummers beating the drums

Trumpeters blowing the trumpets

The cricket, the frog and the kangaroo

Marched between the drummers and trumpeters

Ready…. to prove themselves

The King said,”Let this competition begin”

Hooray….Hooray….Hooray!

(The drummers…sound)

(Trumpeters…..sound)

The cricket started to jump

It was a great jump! Then, the frog jumped

Followed by the Kangaroo!

Who jumped the highest?....Tell us…tell us!

Yes, who jumped the highest?

Who? Who?...Tell us! Tell us!

The truth is……

The cricket jumped the highest

He jumped so high…

So high that no one could see him…

Alas!

The judges ruled that he never left the ground!

Ooooooo………what a pity!

What a pity!

Tsk…tsk…tsk…tsk! What a pity!

Then it was the frog’s turn to jump

The frog jumped less than half as high

But he landed on the king’s head!

He was disqualified for disrespect!

Ooooooo………what a misfortune!

What a misfortune!

Tsk…tsk…tsk…tsk! What a misfortune!

Finally it was the kangaroo’s turn

To prove his superiority

He gathered all his energy

He took a deep breath

With all his might

Using his two strong legs

He jumped….(pause)

Hardly any distance at all!

But…..he was intelligent

He landed in the arms of the princess!

In the arms of the princess?

YES! In the arms of the princess!

Woooooow………what a jump!

What a jump!

Bravo…..Bravo….Bravo! What a jump!

And so the prize

Went to the kangaroo

The competitor who had the BEST SENSE!

Rather than to the highest jumper!

Oh…yes…

The competitor with the BEST SENSE won!

Bravo…Bravo….Bravo!

Drummers beating the drums

Trumpeters blowing the trumpets

The kangaroo jumped in delight!
