The woman down the road : Friendship Poetry

written by Poet : Jeff Pelsang

We always made fun of her as we were teens with nothing to do,

The old lady on the hill who yelled at us for crossing through her flowers to get home after school,

I would yell out "Crazy Bitch", and throw my middle finger in the air,

The guys would all laugh because as teens we just did'nt care,

Once we painted all her red roses charcoal black,

That was the last time I've ever done anything like that,

Guilt ran through my heart and my world was starting to change,

I was starting to grow up and this woman seemed less deranged,

One day I saw her fall to her knees and cry,

I could feel her pain as her emotions filled my mind,

So up the hill I went to see a woman in sorrow suffering in complete misery,

Her tears rained down puddling on the ground without a worry of who would see,

I knelt down by her side and asked if she was alright,

She showed me a picture of her son, a soldier who was sent off to fight,

It was her only child and now he was gone,

A proud marine, Oceans away, and now her heart bleeds as she feels so alone,

I helped lift her up and held her in a long hug till her tears had slowed,

But the guilt from my past actions now have grown,

I wanted to apologize and she could see it in my eyes,

"I forgive you jeffrey", then she kissed me on the cheek and smiled,

You know my name? I asked in disbelief.

"I helped your mom when she was ill", you were such a cutey at age 3.

She almost died with that awful flu,

I stayed by her bedside and did whatever the Lord asked me to do,

I started to cry because of how awful Ive been,

"Jeffrey", It's ok, with time you will become a better man so lift up that chin,

But next time you give me the finger I will cut it off, thats what I'll do,

She paused for a second, then laughed till she was blue,

After that day I visited Martha atleast once a week,

I carried her groceries up the hill and she'd give me a kiss on the cheek,

She became part of my family as our friendship grew,

She watched me Graduate college, she was so proud of me to,

When my sons were born she was an angel who came to our aid,

My wife had past during their birth so Martha moved in and stayed,

She asked for nothing but gave without stop,

She took care of my kids as I worked round the clock,

My kids called her Grandma, but shes much more then that you see,

As she was a gift and God had sent her to me....
