Lost and In Love : Health Care

written by Poet : Jeff Pelsang

Growing old was never Marvins dream, nor was it to grow old alone. When Marvins wife passed away with cancer he said his goodbyes and was grateful that she was finally free from her excruciating pain.

His wife " Milly", who was the love of his life from High School had agreed to Marry Marvin after his 5th attempt to ask her hand in marriage. Truth is she was never physically attracted to Marvin but came to understand no other man could or would love her as much as Marvin did.

They were married for over 62 years and were still so deeply in love which made many other couples very jealious of what they had. When Marvin retired at age 55 he and Milly never left each others side.

On a cold Autumn day that would send a chill down any mans spine, Milly felt light headed as her and Marvin were feeding the pidgeons at the park. She grasped on marvins arm to keep her balance but soon she slumped over and fell to the ground. Marvin called out for help frantically as he held Milly close to his chest and rubbed his wrinkled but strong hands through her hair.

"My Sweet everything will be fine", Someone is comming, you'll be ok my baby...Tears ran down his cheeks as his worry about her condition were more then that of concern.

White Walls, Curtains hanging from the ceiling, and her dear husband started to come into focus. "Marvin", where am I?

Marvin softly and sadly said, were in the hospital baby. You had a fall and the doctors did some tests on you. Then Marvin became really quiet and paced back and fourth a bit. Milly could see that her husband was not telling her the whole truth. So she called for the doctor to come in, in fact she yelled for him.

Doctor Evans quickly ran down to her screaming voice and tried to calm her. Mrs Rolston please calm down, Shhhh, what can I do for you? "You best tell me whats wrong with me", exclaimed Milly! The doctor looked at Marvin then looked back to Milly and knew he had not told her everything.

Milly, "you are very sick and we have had you on pain killers for the last 2 years". You have cancer and it has spread throughout your body. I wish there was something we could do.

Milly looked at the doctor with a confused look on her face. Doctor Marvin and I just fed the pidgeons earlier today, replied Milly.

Marvin walked up to the edge of the bed and grabbed his wifes hand. "Milly", that was over 2 years ago baby. I've been by your side ever since baby, don't you remember?

Milly never remembered as the cancer had taken its toll on not only but her body but also her mind. Marvin loved her no matter what she had said to him when she went through her bouts of pain, or when she treated Marvin as if he were a stranger.

That night as Marvin sat by her side Milly's hand slipped from the bed and onto Marvin's. Marvin woke up and saw her as she looked at him warm and lovingly. "You are my best friend, the love of my life, and I will miss you", then tears trickled down from her eyes and she slipped away.

"Milly, Milly, Milly", Marvin held his wife until they pulled him from her bedside. Lost and confused Marvin paced the Lobby of the Hospital until his son came and picked him up.

That evening Marvin sat next to his son for the first time in 2 years holding a picture of his wife in his hands with it pressed to his chest as if he was still holding her. "Pop", I'm so sorry Pop, his son said in a low and somber voice. Marvin never said a word and when his son finally pulled up into his driveway and parked Marvin slumped forward.

Marvin has passed away holding his wife close to his heart. Without her his will to live was no longer there. He let go so he could join his beautiful Milly in Heaven..
