Behind the Blinds Chapter 8 : Creative Writing

written by Poet : Jeff Pelsang

"Would you move this damn piece of crap"!, Jean yelled towards Clay. "Im going as fast as I can sweatheart", but this car cant go any faster. Clay held onto the wheel and kept the pedal down to the floor his eyes not even looking at his speedometer which was pegged at 120 mph.

What seemed like a drive across country was just a little bit out of town. Everyone from the diner also drove as fast as they could but the shiny red camaro soon faded from their view as it muscled down the road leaving nothing but dust clouds behind.

"Oh my babies", Jean started crying both from the wind blowing into her eyes and the thought of something terrible happening to her children. Clay could only focus on the road, he had never driven this fast in his life and frankly it was scarring the crap out of him at this point. Though he had never raced before he took the turns as if he had been racing all of his life. The rubber squealed around turns and the engine roared as it was pupming out over 318 horse power.

People along the route to jeans house could only make out a brilliant red flash that zoomed by and some even thought it might have been a UFO. Minutes after the red flash had passed everyone else would also pass from the diner and to some it almost looked comical. All these old vehicles and almost an antique truck chasing after some red flash that vanished into the sunset. Ralph leading the way still wearing his cooking hat and apron loaded with grease stains.

"Turn there", Jean pointed to a dirt road and Clay took it fast almost losing control but he managed to get her line up back on the road. Are we almost there clay asked and Jean said just over the hill and we can see my farm. Jean was holding onto the dashboard to try and keep form flying up and down everytime they hit a bump and there were lots of em too.

Jean looked over at Clay and her eyes she saw somebody who might be a little bit of a showboat but when it came down to it Clay was a man in the eyes of an emergency. For a moment she thought about Jim and wondered if he would like Clay, then she thought probably not.

As they broke across the top of the ridge they saw the fire around the cornfield and could see the top of the childrens heads in the middle of it. Clay started slowing down as they approached the farm , not because they were there but because of the thick dark shadow that seemed to flow around the field. "What the hell is that"! Clay stopped his car just 50 yards from the darkness that moved like it had life.

Jeans eyes were frozen and steadfast upon the beast. She knew exactly what it was and she felt its evil many years ago in front of the bonfire in the woods." This is bad clay, this is really bad", What the hell are we going to do! Clay still confused had no idea what he was looking at he just knew it wasnt good. Clay heard the fear in Jeans voice and now the "bat out of hell" car drive he made just didnt seem bad at all.

"Carry", "Andrew", Jean screamed loudly to get her kids attention but the wind was howling so loudly around the cornfield that they couldnt hear it. Should we go in and get them out? Clay asked and waited for an answer but Jean just stood there stairing at the burning field.

"Jean"! Clay screamed her name and then grabbed ahold of her and shook her till she came out of it. We have got to do something Jean but I dont know what. "We have got to do something to get my kids out of there and as quick as possible". Clay watched the evil encirlce the field. He noticed the fire burning at the edges but never any further.

Jean I think your kids are safe where their at. Jean looked at Clay like he was an idiot but before she could scream at him he covered her mouth and held her close so she would listen. He looked in her eyes and said, "Jean your kids are safe, the fire isnt burning the field, and the evil is not going into the field. I dont know what it is but that cornfield is protecting them.

"The Church, The Church", Thats where the church use to sit before it was burned down. Jeans spirits started to pickup knowing that her children were probably in the safest spot in paradise. Clay we have got to get some help out here and drive that demon away. Did you hear me Clay?

Clay started to stutter as he looked passed Jean and towards the field. Jean turned her head and noticed that the evil was no longer interested in the children instead it was heading towards them. Jean grabbed clay and pulled him into the car. Then she Jumped in the drivers seat and fired up the engine and as soon as she did the tires were throwing dirt and rocks in all directions.

Clay looked behind expecting to leave the Demon far behind but instead it was following and following fast. We have got to get to town and warn everyone before this beast gets there, Jean looked towards Clay to make sure he was listening. Alls Clay could blurt out was "OK.

Jean was not as good as clay handling so much power as she managed to hit every pot hole and lose about two hubcaps. Before they knew it though they saw what looked like half of the townspeople heading straight towards them.

"Weve got to warn them do we have time to stop and tell them", Jean asked? Clay looked back again and they had put a little distance between them and the Demon. We wont have much time, only about a minute or less clay responded. Well that will have to do, Jean looked towards clay as she down shifted and slammed on the breaks.

They both jumped out of the car and waived to stop ralph and the others from the diner and whoever else followed from continuing. Ralph quickly came to a stop almost sliding into Clay as his tires skidded to a halt.

Ralph we got to get to town and warn the rest, The Demon has returned! Ralph knew exactly what Jean was talking about because he was one of those boys from years ago who did the young girl wrong. "Lets go", Ralph yelled with a fear and excitment in his voice. Jean and Clay hopped back into the car this time Clay taking the wheel and he laid some rubber down as he fealt the hairs on the back of his neck start to raise.

A chill came with the darkness that followed and Jean looked back to see it was too late. Ralph and the others were heard screaming as the Darkeness surrounded their vehicles and the head of a hidious beast popped out if the top of the cloud watching as Jean and Clay got away.

Jean saw eyes of fire and could sense that this evil, this demon was way too powerful then the one she had seen in the past. They were all in trouble and judgement day may have caught up to this town which tried to hide its wrong doing. We need to get into town as fast as possible and head over to the police station. We have got to warn everyone we possibly can before its too late.

"What the hell is going on around here", Clay asked. Its a long story Clay and Ill tell you when this is all ver just please get us into town as fast as possible. Clay looked back to the road and again his car was doing all it could almost flying off the road with each turn that came.

Within 15 minutes they pulled up to the station and Jean jumped out of the car and ran into the front door of the station. Jimmy was sitting back in his chair with his feet up on the desk taking a nap. "Jimmy what the hell are you doing"! Screamed Jean. Jimmy woke from his nap and Jean had scarred the hell out of him. Jimmy jumped up quickly.

Jimmy," weve got to tell everyone that the demon is back". What are you talking about? Before she answered Jimmy figured it out and his face turned a ghostly white. Yes Jimmy, Its back and we have got to warn everyone. Jimmy thought for a second and then remembered the firestation had the loudest siren around.

Let's go to the firestaion and sound the alarm, even better you stay here and Ill go sound the alarm and will get everyone to meet at the church. That sounds like a good plan Jimmy, Ill start making calls to as many as I can but I hope our church is gonna be safe enough. Jimmy looked towards Jean, Me too...Then he vanished out the front door.
