Behind the Blinds Chapter 5 : Creative Writing

written by Poet : Jeff Pelsang

Behind the Blinds ...Chapter 5 (voices within the wind)

The hills wined with the light breeze that blew threw the trees limbs ruffling the leaves. The sounds of birds slowly faded as Carry and Jobe entered into the edge of the woods. All was an erie quiet as silence fell within the shadows of tall pecan trees. The crunching of dried leaves and twigs was the only thing they could hear and it seemed to grow louder with each step taken. Carry led the way but held Jobe's hand really tight almost to the point of cutting off circulation.

"Over there", she pointed, "Just below that ridge". Carry pulled Jobe even harder as she increased her speed with excitement. Jobe looked around as he was tugged forward, then he looked behind him thinking or rather feeling as if they were being watched. "Carry can you slow down a little bit", in a low voice as if a whisper, "I think were being followed".

They both stopped to listen and heard nothing, not the wind, not the birds, just dead silence. Their once heavy feet had made the only noise that filled the forest but now with that gone the fear was comming back. I dont see anyone Jobe, in fact I dont hear anything either. Jobe looked 360 degrees around them slowly spinning in a complete circle. I dont see anyone either but it feels like someone is watching us.

Carry grabbed Jobes arm again and pulled him towards the ridge. I'll show you the statue and the box then will get the heck out of here. Jobe again was pulled along by Carry and was feeling as if they were making a big mistake. His once joking attitude had slipped away as soon as they had entered the forest.

"There it is", Carry exclaimed! Jobe looked down at the Evil statue and then picked it up to uncover the box that Carry had told him about. "Oh my god", Jobe sounded as he picked up the book. This is a blood book Carry and it is bound in human flesh. My grandfather had told me about a book like this many years ago just days before he was killed.

Carry looked at Josh, "Didnt he die of natural causes? Josh paused for a second, then looked Carry in the eye. I promised my grandmother I wouldnt tell anyone about how grandpa died. We all covered it up and told friends and family that it was an accident. We heard grandpa talking to himself and yelling in the bathroom and that evening he shot himself in the head. Grandma didnt want everyone to know that he had committed suicide. She now carries thoughts that Grandpa wont be in heaven to meet her when she passes away. " I had no idea", Im so sorry josh.

Josh flipped open the pages and the book held heavy in his grasp. It pulled josh into it as he studied the picture of an evil ghost like creature tearing the soul out of a person. He then flipped the page over to read what secrets and mystery this book might hold. "Carry look at this", Its all written in blood and I cant hardly read it. I can make out a couple of characters but its like written in a different language or code.

Carry grabbed the book from Jobes hands and flipped through it. This is an old style script used many years ago by the gypsies who use to live in this area. Jobe looked at Carry with confusion. What are you talking about Carry? Well before paradise was settled there was a family of gypsies who had claimed this area as their own. There were huge fights between the local ranchers and the gypsies and then one day I guess they had packed up and left because they just disappeared. The wierd part is they had left everything they own behind and the local ranchers including Mr Paul Paradise himself had split it up amongst themselves.

Carry can you decipher what it says? It may take a day or two but I think I could figure it out, Carry replied. She then closed the book then told jobe to put the statue back in place. Ok, Jobe then slid the statue back to cover the box but when he did he saw a necklace at the bottom of the box. He grabbed it up not letting Carry see that he had found it. He shoved it in his pocket and kept his hand within his pocket fondling it as he explored the sharp edges that it had.

Carry was ahead of Jobe as usual but this time the once quiet woods filled with a strong wind. The wind howled and had the force of a small hurricane. Carry grabbed the tree closest to her to hang on and she watched Jobe struggle to grab some undergrowth.

Jobe looked frightened as he clung onto some of the shoots that came up from the ground and for what seemed like 15 minutes or longer as the wind blew hard. "Do you hear that Jobe"! It sounds like voices! She yelled over the loud wind and covered her eyes to protect from the flying dirt and debris. "I hear it", Weve got to get out of here and fast Carry"!

Then within seconds the wind stopped and the forest grew quiet with a darkness crawling down the side of the hill towards them. This time Jobe got up from the ground and grabbed Carry's hand and drug her out towards the edge of the forest. Carry kept looking back even when she had almost fell several times and the darkness was catching up.

"Faster Jobe, Faster", she screamed as she felt the cold air whisp across her body as if grabbing her. Jobe continued like a bat out of hell while Carry did her best to stay on her feet. As soon as they broke into the edge of the corn field both Carry and Jobe stopped and took a look back at the tree line.

"Oh my God", did you see it Jobe? I dont know what I saw but I still dont feel safe Carry. Carry was exhausted and was breathing hard and for a moment she felt safe until she saw the darkness pour from the edge of the woods like a slow moving oil spill.

"Ahhh", "Ahhh", in a high pitch scream the fear sounded from her voice and Jobe didnt even take the chance to look back as he grabbed Carry once more and headed towards her house. The front door opened and Andrew stood at the door looking towards them and then looking beyond. "What the Hell is that"? Andrew's mouth dropped open and he was frozen in disbelief.

Jobe made it to the porch, grabbed Andrew's shirt and dragged him in the house along with Carry. "Close all the windows and make sure the back door is locked', then Jobe ran up the stairs to close the bedroom windows. Carry locked the front door and slid Dad's reading chair in front of it. Andrew started to peek out the window to look at the darkness. "No, Get away from the window", Carry screamed at Andrew! Then she ran to the kitchen and back door to finish locking them up. As soon as she got to the kitchen window she saw the frost develop on the window and felt the chill radiating from the window.

Carry where is your Mom? Carry heard Jobe yell from upstairs then replied she's at work. Call her right now, Call 911, call somebody close and let them know whats going on. Andrew ran and hid underneath the coffee table while Carry grabbed the phone and tried to dial out. "No Dial Tone", "No Dial Tone", she yelled up the stairs to Jobe.

Jobe didnt respond, she yelled again and nothing. Carry walked towards the foot of the staircase, Jobe are you there? She slowly walked up the stairs and even though she wanted to be quiet the old stairs creaked and screached every time she shifted her weight onto them. Carry soon found herself at the top of the stairs holding tightly to the banister. "Jobe are you there"? Then she heard his voice, come in here he whispered.

Carry slowly moved towards Jobes voice which was comming from the bathroom and peered through the opening of the half closed door. Look at the mirror, Look at the mirror, Jobe again whispered over and over again. Carry looked up towards the mirror and letters appeared one by one till it spelled out, "Please help me", over and over again..
