Behind The Blinds......Chapter 4
Let the Weekend Begin
Carry made it to school with not a second to spare as she raced into her seat as the old churches bell sounded for the 8th time signifying that it was 8am. Her teacher Mr Sebastian who was a tall wirey young man and also the biggest nerd who ever grew up in paradise had looked at his watch and then at Carry. "Carry this is the third time in two weeks that you have been the last one to class", and I might add that your grades have dropped a bit. His small hazel eyes which seemed to close together studied Carry as she was unpacking her books from her back pack and into her desk.
"Well Mr. Sebastian as you have noticed I wasnt late, the bell just rang, and my grade point average is a 3.9". Mr Sebastian smiled always loving that Carry was verbally strong and always stood her ground using facts to win her battle. She had always been his favorite student and often wished that he was younger. He had day dreamed many times about taking Carry across Whisper Pond and reading poetry to her as his little canoe cut threw the water. He imagined her cheeks rosey and her smile brightly lit as he read.
For a minute or two Mr Sebastian was out of it in front of the class day dreaming until the class started to laugh. They all new that Mr Sebastian had taken a liking to Carry and she became the target for many jokesters within the school. Ron Henry blurted out, "Carry and Mr Sebastian sitting in a tree, K I S S I N G", and before he could finish Mr Sebastian said "Quiet", in a loud and abrupt voice.
Today we are going to learn about the impoprtance of Mathmatics in everyday life. Mr Sebastian continued to dive into his teaching by writing on the chalkboard and covering almost every square inch with the most awful handwriting you had ever seen. Carry looked around the room as did others trying to decipher what had been written. By the time most had figured out what he had written the bell would ring and it would be off to another class.
Today was different though, every year on the same day which was May 11th, all classes would be brought to the auditoriam and everyone present was expected to yell out on stage in front of everyone what their past sins were.
May 11th had become known as the day of cleansing. All the kids looked forward to it and some would blurt out some pretty strange stuff. It was both Scarry and fun at the same time and Carry mostly enjoyed it because she had rarely ever sinned. Her biggest sin was not saying her prayers before bedtime and of course reading inappropriate books that were not approved by the librarian.
She sat there on the hard wooden bleachers for hours listening to all her classmates confess to their sins. Then Jobe stood up at the center stage smiling and yelled out, "forgive me for I have thought about Miss Dresalin being Naked". The auditoriam went quiet as if everyone had froze not knowing what to think. For several minutes you could hear a pin drop and then it started. Carry laughed as did everyone and the auditoriam grew so loud with laughter that principal Roy Kimball decided to excuse all the children out to start an early weekend.
Mr Kimball held back his laughter and could see that Miss Dresalin was not pleased at all in fact she was quite embarrassed. Her face was bright red and she used her hands to cover the front of her blouse as teanagers walked by almost undressing her with their eyes. Mr Kimball waited for the last student to leave and watched Miss Dresalin rush to her classroom as if taking cover. When the coast was clear Mr Kimball, once the school clown in his latter years, laughed and got a real chuckle from the always the center of attention, Jobe.
Carry started walking to her brothers class to get him and walk him home but was met by Jobe. Jobe loved how carry smiled everytime he told a joke or acted goofy." Hey Carry", can I walk you home? Carry looked at Jobe and said, "why would I want to be seen walking with you"? Jobe got really quiet and had a stunned look on his face. Then Carry smiled, "Of course you can", and by the way you need to be polite and hold my books. Carry then threw her books into Jobes arms and he followed behind her like a little dog.
Can I ask you something Jobe without you laughing or tellling anyone else? Yes of course Jobe said while shaking his head up and down as he nodded. Carry then looked around to make sure no one was listening in and then stepped closer to Jobe so he could hear her whisper. Have you noticed anything wierd going on within the last couple of days? She waited for her answer but Jobe had the look on his face like he had experienced something himself.
After a long pause Jobe looked around then started to whisper in her ear. "My mom is seeing things late at night and it just doesnt feel right around here", then Jobe paused as Mr Kimball passed by. "She broke all the mirrors in the house for no reason and it really freaked me out". Carry said "lets get my brother then I have got to show you something Ive found". Ok, Jobe said as he followed behind her still carrying all of her books.
Knock,Knock,Knock, Carry lightly hit the dorr of Miss Daisy's class with a closed fist. Miss Daisy came to the door, "Oh Hi Carry", are you here to pick up Andrew? Yes Miss Daisy, class has let out early for us today. Ok, then Miss Daisy turned towards the class and yelled for Andrew. "Andrew"! Its your sister is here to take you home.
Miss Daisy was always loud due to her hearing problem. She often screamed when teaching class but was the sweetest lady you could ever meet. Andrew got up from his chair with a big smile on his face and raced towards the door. He turned around and looked at his class with that look of "Ha, Ha", I get to go home early. Then Carry grabbed his hand and wisked him out the door.
As they all walked down the old dirt road taking the short cut to the farm, Carry put her arm around Jobes arm. they had always been good friends and had grown up playing together often and now Carry needed someone to trust in. She felt compforted by the fact that she was not the only one thinking there was something wrong, nor was her mom going crazy.
Jobe, Do you believe in ghosts? Jobe looked at Carry and answered, "well I guess I do". I havent seen one but I have felt like I was being watched the last couple of days. Carry thought that was wierd how Jobe was feeling the same way as she was and started to wonder how many more people might be feeling it too.
Has anyone else said anything at school today Jobe? Not really, but I have to say some of my friends have been acting a little out of character. "Go on", Carry said with intense interest. Well my roudy friends were awfully quiet today, and the whole school people were just looking at each other as they passed in the hallway. Carry thought about that for a sec and realized Jobe was onto something.
After about 2.5 miles they were nearing Carry's home by the edge of the woods and as usual Andrew took off for home so he could turn on the Tv and catch the cartoons before the boring programs came on. Carry pointed to the woods past her garden and said, "thats where I found it". "Found what"? Jobe looked at Carry waiting to here about something silly such as a beautiful flower or maybe even about some cute little animal.
" The Evil Statue", Carry's voice said eerily. So you found a statue in the woods and you think it's evil Jobe said with a smile on his face. "Well it looks Evil and it felt Evil", and besides I saw something, like a shadow or something following me. Jobe in disbelief looked at Carry and said," Well lets go take a peek at that Evil statue", it will be fun like our good old days of exploring in the woods.
This is serious Jobe! Carry started to get mad at Jobes look, and his voice that sounded as if in disbelief. You'll see Jobe and then you can lose that look of doubt. Somethings going on around here and Im gonna get down to the bottom of it!
