On This Night
๑۩۞۩๑
When darkness rules upon the earth,
As evening turns to night,
When flocks of birds fly off away,
To chase the fleeing light.
The mother calls out to her child,
And sends him off to bed,
He snuggles in his blanket warm,
His head on pillow laid.
The farmer boards the chicken coop,
Amidst a clucking din,
For chickens, dumb creatures though they be,
Could see the fox get in.
The village idiot walks away,
To seek the local pub,
Two men, both drunk, they swing and sway,
And dump him in a tub.
The giggling lovers close the blinds,
And move beneath their sheets,
They hold each other close that night,
And man and woman meet.
The local pub is quite alive,
This cold and quiet night,
As beer and wine, both drinks divine,
Bring drunken men to fight.
The watchman keeps a constant stare,
As he goes back and forth,
A vigilant guard on this dark night,
He turns his gaze due north.
And up in heaven, the stars arise,
To shine some little light,
Eternal dance, none left to chance,
God’s art…and man’s delight.
