Last Brass SessionFirst Nightingale : African American Poetry

written by Poet : RedMarquee

The shine of a trumpet

 on a last name

Blew a away with you

Hearts and minds

In living color

In a song black woman blue

Mulatto

Sterling girl beaming

Sweet and bedazzled solo

Big and pearly as Pearly Mae

White Gardenia in cold

black tresses of Lady Holiday

Caribbean glamour

Dare imagine Negro woman

Enamored in visions thusly

Movie screen, big band sharp

Chewed and defied of all Jim Crowe

Torched the house down

Blowing Horne and Aretha beget crown

Proud and high yella

Match lit night with drums in flames

Settin off gorgeous spitfire

Now what’s the name?

Glorious and indescribable

Entire brass section filled with Dizzy and Miles

Byrd screaming like sheet music with her title on it

Bathed in stage light

Super fine

Rivaled Ella’s fame

Mulatto woman blew us away

with you in frame

Gleamin like the last Madame

Wind hush and go

Miss her candle

Be subtle with a kind blow

Flicker Lena

Glowin like brass on a last name
