One of my friends always has two dogs, one pup with one old dog, both of them female. When the old dog came to the family it was a pup itself and then it grew up with another old dog who also had cdome to the family as a pup - and so on and so on ...
The reason for this fixed arrangement is that the old dog has learnt all the tricks, it's well-behaved and feel comfortable in the family so it's the perfect teacher of the pup. In due course the by now well-trained young dog teaches another pup what its old friend taught it.
This arrangement works wonderfully and everybody is happy with it, even the dogs ...
