Trouble So Hard : African American Poetry

written by Poet : Ezra-A.-Jones

o lordy, trouble so hard

o lordy, trouble so hard

don't nobody know my troubles but God

don't nobody know my troubles but God

wrenched from my mother on the day was born

sold into slavery, freedom was torn

never again to be held in her arms

no love to comfort 'n' keep me from harm

o lordy, trouble so hard

o lordy, trouble so hard

don't nobody know my troubles but God

don't nobody know my troubles but God

sunup to sundown working the fields

scarred with the whip that the massa wields

look at ya feet, never look in his eyes

u betta watch how ya speak, those are words for wise

o lordy, trouble so hard

o lordy, trouble so hard

don't nobody know my troubles but God

don't nobody know my troubles but God

so many times tried runnin away

but the devil wouldn't let me go too far astray

straight out of hell came the howl of the hounds

eyes rainin with tears, enchained in bounds

o lordy, trouble so hard

o lordy, trouble so hard

don't nobody know my troubles but God

don't nobody know my troubles but God

seen alot of wretch, alot of people gone

alot of trouble in my life, eighty years on

many stories in my head, tired-achy bones

carrying this body's like carrying stones

swing low sweet chariot, coming for me

take me up to heaven where my soul can be free

last breath I've drawn, in the ground I lay

have mercy lord jesus cause i'm on my way

o lordy, trouble so hard

o lordy, trouble so hard

don't nobody know my troubles but God

don't nobody know my troubles but God

o lordy, troubled so hard

o lordy, troubled so hard

don't nobody know my troubles but God

don't nobody know my troubles but God
