Here in Denmark we have had a couple of Muslim attacks on the
newspaper which brought the famous "drawings of Muhammad", and
especially one of the cartoonists has been in focus: Kurt Vestergaard.
In the weekend a Somalian fundamentalist, living in Denmark (!!!), made
his way into his home with an axe and some knives. The purpose of this
"visit" was to kill him, but the assailant was stopped by security. He
was shot in the leg and has felt very sorry for himself ever since,
obviously not remembering the wounds he was to inflict on Vestergaard.
I'm sure that the world as such is more than fed up with these
madmen and it's understandable that an e-mail-"legend" about "Black
Jack", the four-starred general, John J. Pershing (1860-1948), has been
forwarded for some time as it tells of a cruel, but very efficient
revenge over Muslim terrorists. Presumably it's not a historic fact,
but I bet many wish it were:
According to the legend General "Black Jack" had been bothered by numerous Islamic terrorist attacks in the Philippines. He then had 50 of these terrorists caught and sentenced to death. They had to dig their own graves and were shot with bullets that had been rubbed in the blood and fat of hogs which - according to the Muslim faith - seems to contaminate those being shot beyond repair, so to speak. This operation of contamination was performed for them to see and 49 of the 50 condemned men were shot with these bullets, but the last one, Number 50, was set free so that he could tell of the punishment of terrorists. As to the bodies of the dead men then they were buried in a hole filled with Hogs' entrails. According to the legend, and that is what it is, this brought a stop to terrorism in the Philippines for the next 50 years.
Now, examining this legend, I both feel like laughing and like crying. The laughter would be over a revenge that I think we have earned by now and the crying would be over the constant raise in animosity. If Muslims don't like hogs they shouldn't have any, just like we shouldn't have their mad asassins with their axes, knives, guns and bombs because that's what we don't like.
As it is now both have had what they don't like: We had the terrorism and here they had what the legend about "Black Jack" gave them: Hogs' products. I didn't know this, but it seems that bad Danes (and there are a few, yep, that's for sure) have rained pork rinds on Muslims and Muslim meeting places. I bow my head in shame, at the same time fighting an urge to laugh. That's the worst about this situation: One gets caught up in unpleasant urges to do and be something which one doesn't really want to do or be ...
