To Abstain From Guilt : Spiritual Development

written by Poet : EC

My fault, yes, always my fault
the guilt of it all makes my skin shrink
encased as if imprisoned I succumb
this is what Doomsday is about

Slowly I turn to hear my verdict
the judges are faceless and voiceless
mute they scream out their verdict
I listen and listen, but in vain

Taken to my prison cell I sink to the floor
this is so close to the ground that I hear it
murmurings deep down are forming into words
"Guilt is over," they say, "abstain from guilt"

Oh, abstain from it? So guilt is a narcotic?
I rise to my feet and feel the guilt peeling off
it sinks deep into the ground as I watch
yes watch, stripped of my protective guilt
another life as guiltfree, full of new challenges
none of them easy, all of them worthwhile
