The old people of Scandinavia could neither read nor write so all the information they received were from those clerics who could - or rather, from those who could read and carve "runes" or "runic letters". All of these were made of straight lines which were carved into wood, stones or bones and the first runic alphabet was called "futhark" after the first six letters. It consisted of 24 letters and had been with us from circa 200 AC. The more developed runic alphabet only contained 16 letters and it was in use until circa 12th or 13th century. The early rune-messages which were carved are generally speaking magic denouncements of somebody who has upset somebody else and not all of them are even readable. When the ink-written runic messages came into being the readings may to have become easier also for those who were no clerics, but had been taught these magic letters.
The runic alphabets had a "nickname" of sorts: Secrets. Now it has been made known that many of those runic messages really did contain secrets. A new method, developed by Danish scientist, to highlight the old texts has revealed secret words. Some have been more or less deleted, others have been changed into new words, but the changes are visible to the eye when using the new method so now we can see some interesting text-additions or -deductions. Many of the runic texts were old myths which have come down to us, nice and "clean", but now it's apparent that that's not the original version: The translations should have been boosted by quite erotic expressions or details. The old guys were no prudes, but their descendants from the Middle Ages who read their texts were.
Now the old texts will be reconstructed as far as possible and that will change many of them, I'm sure. As most of them are tales of love and revenge - "vendettas" for generations - that will give us quite another experience when we read them.
