Night-Guests : Halloween

written by Poet : EC

In the night I see them
Severed heads floating by in midair
smiling faces, but without eyes
their loose lips move to a lullaby
no wonder that I pray to wake up

I pinch myself as they float past me
desperate to wake up
but how wake from being awake?
by now I realize that this is no dream
I'm all too awake already
the heads are my visitors for the night
and this is going to be a long night
endless even, maybe a forever-night

I try to turn on the light as they brush by me
can't be done, the only light is from their teeth
white and shiny when being flashed
Desperate I cry: "I need light!"
All the heads stop in their tracks
they assemble in the corner
then they turn to face me and I have light
much much too much though

With a smile and a hum all of them open their eyes
as they flash the light from the empty eye sockets I faint
in the morning when they are gone someone greets me
"Happy Halloween!" she yells, looking very happy
