Mirrored : Life

written by Poet : EC

Crying by the mirror
eyes blank with shock
"Who is that," she cried, that woman?
Why is she wearing my clothes?"

"That's you," he said, smiling
"Don't pretend it's not."

The shock was double
no lover's love in that voice
in those eyes or arms
no, nothing but contempt

"You used to be pretty," he said
"You used to love me," she said
"now you don't even pretend.
Besides, you too lost your lustre with age."

The only answer came from the mirror
even muted it cried out:
"I'm innocent, Father Time made me do it."

The couple stared into the mirror
each of them not sensing anything but the cruelty
Both of them exclaimed: "That mirror lies!"
"It contorts my image," he said
"It needs some cleanings," she said
Both of them reached for it
Both of them toppled it to the ground
now each of the many stumps turned into a mirror
their images stared at them from each stump
"Too much," she cried, "let's bury it in the ground"
and so they did, thus attempting to hide the truth
but still their souls cried out: "Why, why, why?"
