Goddess-Messenger : Prose Poem

written by Poet : EC

Mini-terror, elongated and slithering
suddenly there he was, on my foot
I gaped at him, what he did I don't know
those immobile eyes may have stared
or they may not, difficult to know for sure

the dilemma of a foot and a snake
overwhelmed me, I grabbed a dictionary
ready for the kill, for the blotting out of life
then somebody said "it's a grass snake
those don't bite" and suddenly it changed

the mini-terror grew into a real living organism
to kill would be murder of a youngster, an innocent
I withdrew my foot and took the snake for inspection

This animal is beautiful, to touch it is a treat
did it hiss at me? yes, so touching, it defended itself
it slithered, exuding a strength like in lianas
what a grip and what agility, suddenly it escaped
I blessed it as a messenger from old goddesses
as it disappeared in the tall grass, I saw its rôle
in circulation with other Moon-servants of women
of course I'm glad I didn't kill it
would have been murdering the goddess of women
