Trampling along in a historical nightmare
I feel the softness of the blood-soaked ground
nothing sweet about this much too red carpet
the softness sucks one down into the peat of blood
into the ground that was sanctified by this waste of lives
all these sacrifices, so pleasant to the gods, were repaid
they made the harvest a success, the men brave and strong
most important, these sacrifices of life made women fertile
so very receptive, conceiving at the drop of a hat
many newborn died, some from sickness, but not all
one life for many lives, balancing the account of give and take
or so they said as they killed the little ones
