A Cranium Was Found on the Beach : Death Poetry

written by Poet : EC

Embedded in seaweed it shone like a fallen star
bared of flesh, polished by the waves
it grinned, whiter than white
"I'm here," it said, "did you miss me?"
lipless it was in itself a statement of bereavement
but only in looks, everything else spoke of pride
Bare your skeleton and flaunt your soul, was that it?

I didn't know anyone who lost his or her head
nobody I knew got lost at sea to end up on a beach
however, this one knew me
"Who are you?" I asked, quite bewildered
"You, I'm you," it said, "didn't you know?"
Even then I didn't get it. "I haven't lost my head."
"You lost it all, only you didn't notice it."
I laughed at this presumptuousness
"Don't you know that you are my ghost?" it said
at that I woke up, embedded in the seaweed
the softest bed on that beach
