It was back
about ‘64
Me, Billy Rogers and old Tommy Gray
We was just passin’ through
Down around Texas way
We pulled into a truck stop
Needed food and gas in the truck
Seen a
poster inside the place
A deal we
couldn't pass up
Right there in bold black letters
Above a real familiar scene
RODEO TONIGHT
With some band from Abilene
We sorta thought it over
Didn’t take long to decide
We was stayin' overnight
We loved to watch ‘em ride
Found us a real cheap room
And headed fer that rodeo
It was on the edge of town
Just outside of old Waco
Found some empty seats
Had a snack and cold soft drinks
When the action finally started
We didn’t have time to blink
Watchin’ every event
Like kids a'watchin’ snow
Little did we think
We was in fer quite a show
Barrel racin’ was next
A hush ran through the crowd
We wasn’t real sure why
Up to now they’d sure been loud
Old Tommy asked a feller
What the heck’s the deal?
That feller looked at Tommy
And asked if he was fer real
The story that he told
We didn’t wanna believe
We figgered he must be crazy
Or just talkin’ up his sleeve
Said they had a local gal
Barrel rider through and through
Said we wouldn’t be askin’ questions
If we knew what all he knew
Said she’d never won a race
But she entered every year
She was bound to win this time
Then he grinned from ear to ear
She has herself a new mount
A demon horse they say
Bred in the pits of hell
A strange sorta dapple gray
The announcer called her name
And the band began to play
Under the Double Eagle it was
As she flew on through that gate
That horse was movin’ out
Neck stretched and runnin’ fast
He rounded that first barrel so quick
He was just a ghostly flash
Second
barrel comin’ up
They was there before you could see
Around that one and gone fer the third
We was watchin’ but couldn’t believe
After that last barrel was done
She was whippin’ him fer home
We could hear her crazy laughter
We could hear that devil horse groan
They was runnin’ so danged fast
No one was gonna beat their time
But the timer never stopped
Cause they never crossed the line
We had to wipe our eyes
Not a word was even spoke
We watched that gal and horse
Disappear in a puff of smoke
We didn’t waste no time
Got the hell away from there
Headed back to town
We'd had us quite a scare
The arena’s been closed since then
Fences rustin’ to the ground
But you can hear her crazy laugh
If you’re there about sundown
This story still gets told
Around towns and rodeos
About the devil horse and the gal
They called her Waco Rose
