An
Old Codger
Some call me an old codger
But not for my years
They say I was born old
Maybe it’s the gray in my beard
They say I can see the future
Now that’s just a lie
The future I cannot see
It’s the far off look in my eye
I’ve been called too smart
That I should make new inventions
It’s not that I’m smart
I just pay attention
What they don’t understand
And never will see
It’s a defense mechanism
I’m only protecting me
I listened to my elders
I learned from their tales
Of loves come and gone
Some won and some failed
Common sense I picked up
From old women and men
I benefited from that
From where they had been
I learned more from old people
On porches in rocking chairs
Than ever I learned
From my own short affairs
I learned quite a lot
From those folks in the past
How to know what is right
For integrity stand fast
Stand for what’s right
No one will do it for you
Fight the good fight
And take what is due you
The youth of today
May need an old codger
Too many look at them
And say oh why bother
Some say they’re crazy
Some call them insane
I say they need guidance
Just to deal with their pain
Some are lost and misguided
Loving dark more than sunup
I say they need old folks
Just to help them to grow up
I miss those old days
Common sense seems long gone
Maybe some of us old codgers
Should pass some along
Let’s buy rocking chairs
On the porch we can sit
Invite them on in
Pass on good sense and some wit
An old codger I am
And will always be
I may not be the smartest
But I’m happy being me
